Jan. 2016 We will be comparing and contrasting using a Venn diagram. We will be comparing characters in a story and two stories that are similar. We will compare Lon Po Po and Little Red Riding Hood. These are both fairy tales but one was written in China and one was adapted and written in the United States.
Comparing and contrasting is an important skill and is often incorporated into writing tests. Students will be using words to compare such as: both, like, similarly, and, again, much the same as, also, furthermore and likewise.
Students will use words to contrast such as:
however, whereas, on the other hand, while, but, moreover, yet, despite this different, and unlike.

Students also worked on telling is the author’s purpose is to entertain, give information or to persuade.
We discussed that words help create the image in the writers mind. That we can give more detail by telling who? What? When? Where? Why? And How something happened.
We discussed that spatial words tell where…under the table, in the sky,
Temporal words tell time – early in the morning, during the winter storm….

November 20th Compare and Contrast Facts about Trees
This week we learned about trees. We read about deciduous and coniferous trees and wrote about how they are different. We looked at various types of pinecones from different forests and out front of our school. Students read a story about trees, stopped to think about facts, and wrote facts they learned from the story.

Extra Credit in Science:

Sept. 2015 We celebrated Dot day by reading The Dot book… We also celebrated Ride for Reading with an assembly, bike riders with helmets giving out books and every student choosing their very own free book. We had a great week exploring the theme of courage by reading a variety of stories. Students thought of situations from different characters point of view. We discussed how courage takes different forms from sleeping over night at a friend’s house as in Ira Sleeps Over, to the courage to support a family in The Babe and I, to the courage to stand up for injustice and inequality in Teammates. Students are going back to the text for evidence of how a character feels and acts. Students are communicating effectively by agreeing, disagreeing, and adding on to discussion in class. Reading standards developed are Identify characters, setting and events in a story.
Writing – students know that adjectives describe nouns and are using adjectives in their writing. In math we are wrapping up our unit on multiplication and division and will have a test on Tuesday. Students are currently explaining their thinking about how they are solving word problems using our math vocabulary. Math standards developed are:
Have your child type sentences or stories on the computer at least once a week. Practice with them for the spelling tests on Fridays and vocabulary tests on Mondays. Think About Vocabulary! – We practiced one of the “Close Read” steps of circling words we think are important or want to think about while reading the Pledge of Allegiance and Ruby the Copy Cat. We are encouraging students to stop and think about vocabulary when they are reading. Reading vocabulary: pleasant coincidence, modeled, loyal, recited, murmured The Pledge of Allegiance – Students use the “Close Read” model of stopping and thinking about vocabulary as we read the Pledge of Allegiance. We discussed synonyms for the terms…pledge = promise, allegiance = loyalty , republic = representative government, indivisible = will not be divided, nation = country, liberty = freedom and justice = fairness. We played a synonym matching game. We then wrote the meaning of the pledge in simple terms… I promise to be loyal and respectful to the flag Of the United States of America And to the representative government for which it stands One country, under God, which will not be divided, With freedom and fairness for all.
